me! it's my turn to answer ...

... 20 questions. posed to graphic designers by aiga (american institue of graphic artists ... over here). i know. i'm not a graphic artist, but i wanna answer the questions, anyway!
(for r|intern-related questions,
check out
answers to Qs about my "real job")

ReLo-ing from SD to BA
ReLo-ing is a northern california gal living in san diego longer than expected, business owner, cal berkeley grad, dog-owner wannabe, and hybrid car owner.

she's not a graphic artist. she's the convergence of env'l engineer (
via the chem eng route), technical (and sometimes creative) writer, people observer (and listener), and woo-woo (and channeler).

she wants to develop and exercise her creativity - interests (lately) include vicariously living through those involved/dealing with typography, product design, graphic design, music, public space/art, and tattoos. (this list will be different tomorrow ... or actually within the hour.)

1. What talent would you most like to have?
. environmental designer or graphic designer (... o.k., how about being multilingual?!).

2. What is the best book you’ve ever read?
. harold and the purple crayon.

3. Who is your hero?
. in the make-believe world, harold (see answer 2). in the real world, harold (see answer 2).

4. What irks you?
. someone/anyone saying "irregardless" (more points for irking esp. in any debate and/or while scratching a chalkboard ... chalkboards still exist, right?).

5. What movie title could also be the title of your biography?
. ever after

6. Where would you like to wake up tomorrow morning?
. first of all, i just want to wake up ... and second of all, somewhere - on vacation.

7. What’s the new black?
. old black (is this a trick question?)

8. What will be your legacy?
. perhaps (compared to the 9 (nine!) others) logging more phone minutes way back in my corporate days and being told that "did not make sense" because I was also very productive. (uh ... could it be i didn't go to 20-million corporate meetings?!) ... o.k., taking this Q a l'il more seriously, i will be that gal who's an integral part of the start of the environmental professional development movement.

9. What is the most consistent conflict you face?
. keeping my back car seat uncluttered.

10. What is the best snack food?
. sunflower seeds - with shells and some salt (and a bag for the shells - but i don't snack either on the bag or the shells).
11. What is your most treasured possession?
. imagination.

12. Favorite artificial flavor?
. any of the
sour fruit balls' flavors.

13. What is your greatest fear?
. a really-really-REALLY bad political decision that has international consequences.

14. You have an extra $100,000, whom or what will you give it to?
. a l'il to family, a l'il for myself (and the vacation, see answer 6. ), a l'il for my business, and a l'il to various non-profits that address women's issues, education, auto-immune disorders, the environment, and poverty.

15. Crunchy or smooth?
. smunchy

16. If you could master two tasks at one time what would they be? (ie: walking and talking etc)
. singing and playing an instrument - perhaps the piano, guitar, or tambourine.

17. What is the greatest invention of the past 100 years (give or take)?
. hmmm? magnetic closures ... uh, sign language ... no, uh, bar codes ... i guess i don't have a strong opinion (yet).

18. What is the most beautiful word in the English language?
. assuage.

19. Animal, mineral, vegetable?
. yes.

20. What’s next?
. shower, shampoo, shine ... and hunt and forage for brunch.

thanks for indulging!

my life with pigdog ... and his 2 new friends

those who have known me since college - also know pigdog ... the nickname i gave for the furry fellow to the right.

the beginning ... i picked him up at yarmo zone (which was previously yarmo), which no longer exists - was on the corner of durant & telegraph. (slice of pizza at blondies, afterwards)

not my dog ... uh ... yeah ... pigdog is not my dog ... pigdog is someone's dog ... pigdog is a postcard i have carried around with me for more than 20 years.

back-story ... i don't know this dog's name. i do know the pic was taken with a fisheye lens ... photographer: chip simons ... series: "i am a dog"
[more on this back-story to now-story later in the post]

he lives on the fridge door ... in preparation for my move from SD to BA, pigdog has survived 7 fridge doors - he'll be leaving his 8th, fairly soon - and will settle down for a little bit on his 9th fridge door.

he has traveled once ... at one point, i mailed him up to a friend, g (in sacramento), as a get well; g had bypass surgery (quadruple, i believe). pigdog came back. my friend returned him with a very hearty 'thanks' and figured i should really keep pigdog (which was totally cool).

now with the move ... i'm packing boxes, labeling boxes, donating items, recycling items, cleaning, dusting, etc. ... and i have a small pile of "things i will drive up" ... pigdog is one of them.

things i will drive up ... these are those personal memorabilia items, items that if i broke them - i would be bummed (and if a mover broke them, i'd probably be totally ticked-off), and items, that if lost them, i'd make a point to replace them ... pigdog is one of them.

back-story revisited ... as i opened the fridge (frankly, to clean the fridge out a bit - ewww), pigdog greeted me. soooo ... for whatever reason, i did the following - i wrote the photographer of the postcard, as follows:
hi there mr simons... i just wanted to let you know how much i love your 'i am a dog' series. and even more, i enjoyed visiting your web site!

BACK STORY: when i was in college (in the mid-80s), i picked up a post-card, which has since been lovingly referred to as 'pig dog' ... and whenever i am at a store that sells postcards, i always (and i mean ALWAYS) make a point to see if i can snag any more 'pig dog' postcards (or like-kind) and send out to friends. and my friends have since forwarded me like-kind post cards.

NOW: i am in the process of moving, my friends call me a pack rat (and i say 'thank you'), and pig dog (the original post card) remains with me ... so while packing, i came across the card (attached) and just visited your web site.

i guess i just wanted to say i really enjoyed visiting your web site ... viewing your photos ... and wish you continued success!

thanks for the smiles!

and much to my surprise, i received a response (completely unexpected!) from mr. simons, as follows:
cool thanks. I am a dog was a story about me and how i felt....at
the time. moving to nyc after living in the wide open of new
mexico. My bunny pictures were how i was the last few years. ...sort
of melancholy and sad... The postcards were an antidote to working
for magazines...puns and jokes and"bad..is good" mentality. My new
black period will be up soon...it is very...black....but very
sensuous and beautiful. Thanks for writing....it's nice to know that
something i do makes someone a bit happier.
chip
... along with the attached and the following quip ...

hay...weed better bale before the cops get here....

pigdog now has 2 new friends
... whom i shall simply call 'hay' and 'bale'.

r|meal: region

[r|meal* - to dine at places in San Diego County -
places i've not been, as well as places i've not been recently.]

Region ... in Hillcrest [09/22] for din-din with a + kaa. 1st time at suggestion of an ono s.chef. great suggestion! having no reservations, we were forced to sit - and - talk - and - drink for about 30-minutes (oh what torture ... good conversations and laughter!)

... and they were witness to my feeling compelled to try out the new phrase i learned imitated from todd (but without the tee).

[note: neither bartender nor server knew the phrase.]

  • drinks - 2 drew's berry martinis (raspberry, vodka, simple syrup) and a hopler gruner veltliner (austria)
  • openers - Bruschetta with Grilled Octopus & Lemon; Organic Garden Lettuce Salad; Salad of Ramona Figs, Pinenuts, Goat Cheese & Greens
  • entrees - Tagliatelle with Arugula Pesto & Pecans; Grilled Albacore, Stewed Peppers, Tomatoes, Garlic; Jidori Free Range Chicken al Mattone, Herb Risotto
o.k. - kaa has a menu, and she posted the 09/22 menu as a comment --- the entrees were just fabu! food was sooooo flavorful, service was great, and company was fun. (tho' i continued to rehearse practice the phrase several times during din. (no forks were thrown at me, intentionally, so they say.)

valet chit-chat pays off! (the universe came to the rescue of a + kaa. i stopped wit da new phrase parrotting.) as usual - in SoCal - it's convenient necessary (esp. on a friday nite) to valet. (ugh!) but the bonus of valet-ing this time was meeting - julio - who knew EXACTLY the new phrase - in fact, i think he danced in place (no. i'm certain he danced a little).

[*NOTE: to avoid my kitchen.]

r|meal: chilango's

[r|meal* - to dine at places in San Diego County -
places i've not been, as well as places i've not been recently.]

Chilango's ... in Hillcrest. [09/20 din] Yum!!! has good mix of non-veg & vegetarian offerings on menu. kaa and i had din-din here.
  • compliments of the house (!) - Sopa deTortilla Vegetariana before entree ... strawberry ice cream after din.
  • k's din - Rajas con Hongos y Queso – México City: Roasted poblano pepper strips (mildly spicy) sautéed with wild mushrooms, grilled onions and epazote herbs. Topped with sour cream and melted queso chihuahua
  • my din - Pollo con Nopales de Texcaltitlan – México City: Grilled chicken and fresh Opuntia cactus leaf sautéed with a spicy smoked red pepper sauce prepared with chile guajillo and chile de arbol
uh ... why no food pics? hmmm ... i may have lost track of the little task to click pics after the yum-yum sangria was served and enjoyed throughout the meal ... not to mention the good conversation!
[*NOTE: to avoid my kitchen.]

pjb?! cocowya!

come-out-come-out-wherever-you-are!
pjb ... come out to playeeeyayyy!
DUDE!!!

recall - when i was tagged, you played along but answered just a couple ... and here they are to jog your memory and complete the tag, dude ...

Four jobs you have had in your life: I had some interesting and not so interesting summer jobs in high school and college:
  1. Telephone solicitor (tried to sell credit cards; this is where I learned to handle rejection)
  2. Pots and pans cleaner in a hospital cafeteria (my nickname was the "pit monster", enough said)
  3. Gopher on the shop floor of a water pump manufacturer
  4. Movie theater projectionist (I quit after I found out I was just cheap scab labor during a strike)
Four movies you would watch over and over: Movies I watch whenever they are on TV (I guess that implies over and over):
  1. Godfather I or II (sometimes they will show the "Godfather Saga" where the two films are presented as one film and in chronological order rather than some scenes as flashbacks)
  2. Sure Thing (I watch most early Cusack films; this one introduced us to a young Nicolette Sheridan, way before Desperate Housewives and even Knotts Landing. Rob Reiner directed this one. Favorite line - "Consider outerspace").
  3. Road House (one word - Swayze)
  4. It's a Wonderful Life (until a few years ago this was on TV at least four times a day between Thanksgiving and Christmas; I am just a sucker for this film
  5. I know you said four, but the TV stays locked on to the Christmas Story Marathon when it is on (You'll shoot your eye out kid)
o.k. - back to r|work.

r|today is r|work

still this ... and 'cuz it's sunday ... distractions also may include a few other news-y stuff - NYT (tho' preferably hard copy), maybeLATimes, a mocha (instead of a latte), and out & about to enjoy a l'il of SD. oh - and some more blogthings to add to yesterday's distractions. but priority - get done with this r|work.

r|break: ('bout every 3 hrs) - oracle?!

[yet another jaunt into procrastination-world this r|weekend]

... so mr. bill n is 65% luck in VT ... and asked as a follow-up question -
what will happen near the bay bridge?
not quite yet the oracle (as that belongs to mr. cordoban-wearing-gmf in md), i don't have the definitive answer. to recast the question, so i could try to answer, we have:
will the bay bridge "thing" happen smoothly and timely?
and here are some answers a la magic 8 balls on the net, and the answers are:
  • no (from this 8 ball)
  • don't count on it (from this 8 ball)
  • signs point to yes (from this 8 ball ... that i "shook" 3 times)
  • better not tell you now (from this 8 ball ... like the suspense. i can visit in another 3 hours)
my current preference - bob. simply put, he said "oui"!!!

r|break: buy a lotto ticket 2day, perhaps?

[another l'il distraction during r|weekend]

Your Luck Quotient: 75%

You have a high luck quotient.
More often than not, you've felt very lucky in your life.
You may be randomly lucky, but it's probably more than that.
Optimistic and open minded, you take advantage of all the luck that comes your way.

[when can i get out
of this air quality chapter?!]

r|break: moi, type a?

[a l'il distraction while i r|work]

You Have A Type A- Personality

You are one of the most balanced people around
Motivated and focused, you are good at getting what you want
You rule at success, but success doesn't rule you.

When it's playtime, you really know how to kick back
Whether it's hanging out with friends or doing something you love!
You live life to the fullest - incorporating the best of both worlds

R|weekend is R|work

benefits of this kind of weekend? must now get more coffee (which means i should also deal with the hygiene thing, eh?) ... then type some more

R|ReLo #23: today's events

Last update was R|ReLo #22 and a reminder that "yes, i am moving in October" - for believers ... and non-believers --- check out the revisit of previous post for the "yes & you" bullet on Y ... because ... and watch me procrastinate throughout the work-day (ha!). I'll post progressive (and perhaps digressive) updates of our efforts throughout today (and maybe a pic or 2) ... so here we go:
  • 8 AM - kiosk coffee down the street
  • 9 AM - moving company #1, mr. bill, is dropping by to give an estimate for move from SD to BA.
  • ~10:15 AM - (looks like 3 random people thrown together, sort of) mr. bill leaving after providing us with the requisite booklet (thanks, CPUC) of info & his company's quote ... while we provided him with ski wear.
  • ~10:15-1:30 PM - sweat shop, enviroslave, crank-work-out atmosphere
  • ~ 1:30 PM - sushi lunch break with 3 of the 4 pairs of feet.
  • ~ 3:00 PM - ben & jerry's ice cream break.
  • ~ 3:15 PM - telephone quote from an SD moving company.
  • ~ 6:PM - sweat shop environment dissolved ... until 7:00 PM ... for more cranking-out ...
sleep? what's that?

"You're... you're crazy man. I like you, but you're crazy"

"Old School" Tranquilizer Dart Clip

LOVE - LOVE - LOVE this clip!

Saturday, September 02, 2006

Y ... because

... it's been a relatively long time (end of may) since spinning girl issued "Y" ... and i'm stepping up to the plate. i've been in the dugout a bit ... then mulling things around on deck ... but now it's time ...
[one of the SD urban trees ]

... to start writing again, and to start sharing,
[as spinning girl has done so]

so it goes something like this ...

"Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Write ten words beginning with that letter in your journal, including an explanation of what the word means to you and why, and then pass out letters to those who want to play along."
[for those of you who STILL refuse to post and INSIST on calling me or e-Mailing me ... fine ... feel free to continue to do so - but know that it's o.k. to get with the program]

[PREVIEW: yttrium, youth/young, yesterday, yes & you, yolk, year, yip yap, gen Y... and then something to share that begins with the letter "c"... so i didn't quite get to '10 words' with "Y" ... so that's why i'm sharing some 'C' that came to mind]
  • Y, a.k.a. yttrium ... on the periodic table. the periodic table was my friend and my enemy in college. and majoring in chemical engineering is DIFFERENT from majoring in chemistry. here's the deal - i don't know all the chemicals listed on the periodic table. i know the ones that are related to what i do now - air quality (e.g., H, C, O, N, S). y'see, chemical engineering is different from chemistry, because the folks with chemistry degrees have MANY, MANY other elements they deal with. but don't get me wrong ... it's not like i know my chemical engineering stuff. but i do know PV=nRT, and that has gotten me far enough. and from chemistry, i did like the grignard reaction! (by the way, i thought of "Y", the chromosome, for whom i adore my gay friends, as well as my straight friends, but then i'd just end up writing about dating, and i've already been there, done that. ha!)

  • youth, young - and its other "relative" words ... to me - youth/young is **not** about plastic surgery, one's age, or immaturity. growing, learning, and discovering are words i associate with youth/young. in fact, i also believe that when one is old or older, there continues to be the opportunity to grow, learn, and discover. (but my letter is "Y", so i'm sticking with the directions). thank you for telling me i look young for my age, but also know that i'm o.k. even if i look "as old" or "older", as i cherish being told so by my 6 yr old niece and my 8 yr old nephew that my gray hair looks cool for an old tia.

  • yesterday ... is as important to me as today and tomorrow. many-many-many yesterdays ago, i learned to play piano; i believe that has contributed to my interest in music. many-many yesterdays ago i lived in sacramento and my fond memory from back then ... life planning on a chili's restaurant napkin while eating seasoned french fries with a good friend; i continue this, as it has become part of who i am, oddly enough. (now, i'm not as picky about the restaurant, and i don't need to be eating french fries when doing so.) many yesterdays ago my dad died. as very emotional and sad as that was, remembering that yesterday gives me strength. just yesterday i had dinner with a good friend. i hope to have more wonderful yesterdays!

  • yes & you ... i am moving to the bay area. please be supportive. got things in motion. and now, most realistically, i will get movers scheduled for the 1st week of october to pick my sh** up and pack some sh** up. if you are reading this and rolling your eyes because it's not the september time frame, please don't make this about you. you may detect some attitude here, but that is not my intent; it's me --- being direct, honest, and informative. it's to let you know that it's difficult to leave you if you are in SD, and to let you know (if you live in the BA) that i'm excited to be moving to the BA. yes i would like some help and advice regarding my move, and you are an important part of that, but please ... remember it's also about me. and if you want to do the whole "tough love" thing about the move, i'll appreciate the attention, but i'd prefer the cheerleader approach, if ya don't mind. yes, i'll answer my e-mail and phone if you cheer! you, i love dearly for the support!

  • yolk (and this is not about eggs) or yoke ... i own a sewing machine, really (i think it's packed away, right now). and i learned how to sew many-many-x3 yesterdays ago. first item - a smock. second item - an apron. third item - overalls. and fourth item - plaid hoody ... all circa mid-'70s. and afterwards - "real" stuff - painter pants, blazers (for my mom), shorts, camp shirt (a bit of a failure, but i tried), and of course, my sr. prom dress (from a Vogue pattern ... where the fabric color totally had to match my shoes). sew lately? not so much. i still have the machine - so maybe i will do so. could it be that i watch my fav reality tv show (and its reruns) because of this little hobby?

  • year ... another year is what i'll be turning - when i'm moved in to the BA. i'll be a prime number (which holds special meaning for me, and i don't know why). i was born in the year of the rabbit, with the water sign. checking out other water rabbits --- i am in good company (... oh you, mr. depp!)

  • yip yap... is pretty much why i have the cell phone plan with the mostest minutes ever ... and i manage to exceed the mostest minutes ever like this tall, this wide, and this deep! yip yap yip yap yip yap. it's also why i don't mind when people say "yeah, we expected that" after I say "i have an opinion" - "i have a question" - "i ..." yip yap yip yap yip yap. and if i'm not yip yapping, i'm probably tip tapping on my keyboard. and if i'm not tip tapping, i'm likely just doing something. do i sit still and quiet? sure. like i mentioned, i have to watch my show! don't call me during the show - i won't yip yap with you. commercials - catch me during commercials.

  • Gen Y ... or as i have recently learned, aka the Millennials. My interns - Gen Y. Me? - uh... not so sure. i need to get/stay with the program. Wiki tells me this. Pink Magazine tells me this. Because i still intend to have r|intern when i'm moved up in the BA, i also am aware that it's in my best interest for r|intern to attract them gen Yers. (thanks j, for the tip back then!) In the end ... X, Y, e-i-e-i-o ... let's all just get along, eh? oh! i should say that i have learned quite a bit from r|interns ...sothanks much! (now, go find me some enviroslaves, eh? j/k.)
o.k. - and now for my departure into "C" - which is simply because i am going to B&J to get some "chocolate therapy" (!!!).
  • criminal ... o.k. - he was a criminal. yes, i - uh - "dated" (sort of but sort of not) - someone who was once (or maybe twice) in prison. (i found this out AFTER our 2nd date.)
  • calipatria ... "prison," you say? "yes," i say, "prison." calipatria prison, to be exact.
  • center for land use interpretation ... "huh? what does this have to do with criminal and calipatria?" HELLO!!! ---"C" (we've moved on from "Y").
here is the deal - when the center described calipatria, which houses criminals, here is what was written. and if you are too lazy to go to that link, let me help you out - it says ...
"Visitor Info: Like most prisons, it can be visited through proper channels, by either arranging a press tour, having relatives to visit there, or by commiting a crime. Public roads surround the facility, which is said to have a high-voltage electric perimeter fence. On Blair Road, northeast of downtown Calipatria."
this - i found worth taking up my time several weeks ago when i googled calipatria.
  • chocolate therapy ... ciao!
[and if you wanna read another 'me' thing,
i was tagged a while back.]
